Highlights

Cutter Boley will start at quarterback when the Sun Devils open their 2026 season, ending a competition that had stretched through spring and into fall camp. ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported the decision Saturday morning, per Arizona's Family.

The third-year gunslinger transferred to ASU over the offseason and was viewed as the favorite to win the job. He beat out sixth-year quarterback Mikey Keene, second-year player Cam Dyer, and true freshman Jake Fette. At the start of fall camp, Boley and Keene had separated themselves and often alternated series leading the first-team offense. Following the team's scrimmage at Camp Tontozona on Aug. 15, Boley began getting all of those reps.

Boley began his career at the University of Kentucky as a four-star signee. He saw action in four games in 2024, including a start in the season finale against Louisville, throwing for 338 yards and two touchdowns. He then started 10 games for the Wildcats last season, throwing for 2,160 yards and 15 touchdowns, and added two rushing scores as he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Turnovers remain the question mark. Boley threw 12 interceptions in his final Kentucky season, and limiting turnover-worthy plays was an emphasis throughout spring and fall practices. Head coach Kenny Dillingham praised both Boley and Keene for progress in that area.

ASU hosts Morgan State on Sept. 5.
