A Valley resident who tested positive for measles is believed to have exposed shoppers at the Walgreens on Via Linda, near Shea and Frank Lloyd Wright boulevards, on Sept. 9 between 8 a.m. and 10:25 a.m., the Maricopa County Department of Public Health announced Thursday.

The resident is believed to have contracted the virus while traveling out of the county, according to MCDPH. Health officials note the measles virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves, meaning shoppers did not need direct contact with the patient to be at risk.

Anyone who was in the store during that window is urged to watch for symptoms through Sept. 29. Symptoms typically appear seven to 12 days after exposure, though in some cases they may not show up for up to 21 days. Officials list high fever above 101 degrees, red and watery eyes, cough, and runny nose as the primary symptoms to watch for.

The exposure is part of a broader trend: Maricopa County has recorded 28 measles cases so far this year, part of a national total that has topped 3,000 across the U.S. Dr. Nick Staab, chief medical officer for MCDPH, said in a written statement that "Measles is making headlines, but we have several illnesses spreading right now, and we have vaccines to protect against many of them, including measles."

Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine prevent measles, officials say. The vaccine is available year-round, and health officials also recommend an early dose for infants ages 6 to 11 months who face a higher risk of exposure.

Anyone with symptoms or questions about exposure should contact their healthcare provider. MCDPH's full public notice is available at ein.az.gov.
