Phoenix is asking the public to pick the name of its newest library branch from five candidates, all drawn from native Sonoran Desert plant life: Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, Manzanita, or Senita. Voting is open through Oct. 2 at the city's online portal, according to the Phoenix Public Library, which confirmed the Aug. 31 start date.

The naming tradition follows a pattern the library system has maintained across its existing locations. Library Services Director Erin MacFarlane said in a statement that "Phoenix Public Library locations have always celebrated the beauty and diversity of our desert environment" and called on residents to help choose a name that will "reflect how our libraries help shape futures, inspire generations and create a welcoming space for all."

Officials said the selected name will also shape the physical design of the new space. From there, the name goes to the Library Advisory Board and the City of Phoenix Heritage Commission before requiring a final vote from the Phoenix mayor and city council.

12News and AZFamily both reported the public vote this weekend. The Oct. 2 deadline is firm.
